Handwerk verbindet: New paths into the construction sector

At our taster days at the BAUAkademie Kärnten, it became clear what Handwerk verbindet is all about: learning the language, trying out craft work and taking the first steps towards working in construction. In 2026, we are already starting our third round. Our twelve-week project is aimed at people with a migration background who want to gain a professional foothold in Carinthia. The focus is on learning German, basic technical training and practical experience at the training construction yard.
Learning with a practical focus
At Handwerk verbindet, German is not only learned in the classroom, but directly connected to everyday working life. Participants practise terms, processes and typical situations that occur on construction sites. At the same time, they gain insights into various professional fields – including construction, timber construction, painting, roofing and drywall construction. This creates a first practical introduction to professions that are urgently needed in Carinthia.
Language as a key
In construction, language is more than communication. It helps people understand work instructions, ask questions and work safely in a team. That is exactly why we combine language support with practical orientation. This is made possible by a broad partnership: the Carinthian Construction Guild, AMS Kärnten, the Province of Carinthia, the Austrian Integration Fund, the Carinthian Adult Education Centres, IAM, BAUAkademie Kärnten and the Construction and Woodworkers’ Union work together through Handwerk verbindet to create new perspectives.
Opportunities for people and companies
Handwerk verbindet creates opportunities on both sides: participants can gain their first experience, while companies get to know motivated potential future employees. This first opportunity to try things out can lead to the next step – such as an internship, a job or an apprenticeship. Handwerk verbindet shows how integration can become practical: through language, craft and cooperation. The taster days made it clear that opportunities are not only talked about here – they are tried out directly.
