Why visibility on construction sites can save lives

Many hazards on construction sites don’t arise from dramatic mistakes, but from fractions of a second. A key factor in this is visibility. If you are noticed too late, you are at risk – even if you are working attentively.
Construction sites are dynamic and often confusing work environments: moving machinery, changing light conditions, and dust make it difficult to maintain an overview. Even in daylight, people who do not stand out clearly from their surroundings may not be seen immediately. The poorer the visibility, the higher the risk. The issue is not always a lack of attention, but often delayed perception.

This applies in the construction sector
Whenever visibility becomes a risk factor – for example due to machinery, traffic, or poor lighting – high-visibility clothing is considered personal protective equipment (PPE). Employers are required to provide it, and workers are obliged to wear it. Proper use is also part of workplace instruction.
The legal basis is the Regulation on Personal Protective Equipment (PSA-V), BGBl. II Nr. 77/2014, § 16, vgl. Arbeitsinspektion: Kommentierte PSA-V, § 16
High-visibility vests are more than a “requirement”
High-visibility clothing is not a symbol, but a tool. Bright colors, especially yellow or orange, increase contrast with the surroundings, while reflective strips bounce back light sources – such as vehicle headlights – and enhance visibility. The key function: they ensure that people are recognized earlier, not only at the last moment.
Good to know
High-visibility clothing only protects when used correctly. According to regulations, personal protective equipment must be functional, properly fitting, and suitable for the specific task.
In practice, this means: dirty, damaged, or covered high-visibility clothing can lose its protective effect – even if it is being worn.

So don't forget:
Good visibility may seem like a small thing, but it is an important one – because safety only works when it is applied consistently.
Wear high-visibility clothing where required
Make sure it is clean and clearly visible
Do not cover reflective strips
Don’t assume that others will “see you anyway”
Visibility is not an extra – it is protection. A lot is happening simultaneously on a construction site. That is exactly why it is crucial to be seen early. Because sometimes, that makes all the difference.
